What is Bitcoin Dominance?

Bitcoin Dominance is calculated by comparing Bitcoin’s market capitalization with the total market capitalization of all cryptocurrencies. Also known as BTC Dominance, this metric shows how significant Bitcoin is within the overall crypto economy.

Historically, Bitcoin Dominance has remained above 50% for most of its existence, dropping below 40% only briefly during parts of 2017 and 2018. This means that, for the majority of time, Bitcoin alone has represented at least half of the total cryptocurrency market value.

Bitcoin Dominance Chart

You can review Bitcoin Dominance data for the years 2013 through 2020 in the table above. As shown, BTC Dominance has rarely dropped below 40%—only three times during 2017 and 2018, which is also remembered as the “altcoin season.” Outside of that period, it has mostly stayed above 50% and was over 60% by the end of 2020.

What Does Bitcoin Dominance Indicate?

The Bitcoin Dominance index can be used to gauge investor sentiment in the cryptocurrency markets. Just like in traditional markets, crypto prices are formed by supply and demand, and this index highlights Bitcoin’s influence compared to altcoins.

A high Bitcoin Dominance index often indicates that investors are avoiding risk and moving their funds into Bitcoin, which can act as a safe-haven asset similar to gold during global crises. In such times, investors prefer Bitcoin, pushing the dominance index higher. Conversely, during risk-on periods, investors shift toward altcoins, causing the index to fall.

In markets where altcoins are declining, traders tend to convert their holdings back into Bitcoin, further driving up the index. As a result, a strong Bitcoin Dominance index can also be seen as a potential signal of an upcoming altcoin bear market.

Since Bitcoin’s market value directly impacts the Bitcoin Dominance index, tracking BTC price is an important indicator. As Bitcoin grows faster than the total of altcoins combined, Bitcoin Dominance rises. You can follow the latest Bitcoin price chart below:
