What is Litecoin (LTC) and When Was It Launched?

Litecoin (LTC) is one of the earliest and most popular altcoins in the cryptocurrency market. Often referred to as the “silver to Bitcoin’s gold”, Litecoin was designed as a lighter and faster version of Bitcoin. It was launched in October 2011 by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer and later an executive at Coinbase.

Most notably, it uses the Scrypt hashing algorithm instead of Bitcoin’s SHA-256, which was originally designed to make mining more accessible and less dominated by large mining corporations. Another major difference is block generation speed: while Bitcoin requires approximately 10 minutes per block, Litecoin creates new blocks in just 2.5 minutes. This allows for faster confirmations, making LTC more suitable for everyday transactions.

Litecoin also has a significantly larger maximum supply, capped at 84 million coins, compared to Bitcoin’s 21 million. This higher circulation limit, combined with faster transaction speeds and lower fees, has made Litecoin one of the most widely adopted cryptocurrencies.

Who Created Litecoin?

Litecoin was developed by Charlie Lee in 2011. Before founding Litecoin, Lee experimented with another digital currency project called Fairbix, which was unsuccessful due to technical flaws. With Litecoin, however, he managed to design one of the first true altcoins that improved upon Bitcoin’s weaknesses without deviating from its decentralized principles.

Interestingly, Charlie Lee later sold and donated all of his LTC holdings in 2017 to avoid conflicts of interest, but he continues to actively promote and develop the Litecoin ecosystem. Despite Lee being the founder, Litecoin is a decentralized, community-driven cryptocurrency, meaning no single individual or company owns it.

Litecoin is widely available and can be bought or sold on nearly every major cryptocurrency exchange worldwide. In Turkey, LTC is listed on BtcTurk, Paribu, and Bitci, while internationally, it is supported by Binance, Coinbase, Bitfinex, and Bitstamp.
