About

What is Solana (SOL) and When Was It Created?

Solana (SOL) is a high-performance blockchain platform designed to support decentralized applications (dApps) and scalable crypto projects. Known for its fast transaction speeds and low fees, Solana has positioned itself as one of the strongest competitors to Ethereum in the blockchain ecosystem.

The Solana network uses a unique consensus mechanism called Proof-of-History (PoH) combined with Proof-of-Stake (PoS), which allows it to process up to 65,000 transactions per second (TPS)—far surpassing most other blockchains. This scalability makes Solana particularly attractive for decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms, NFTs, and Web3 applications.

The native cryptocurrency of the Solana network is SOL, which is used for paying transaction fees, staking, and participating in network governance.

When Was Solana Launched?

Solana was officially launched in March 2020, after years of development by the Solana Foundation. Since then, it has grown into one of the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization, attracting developers, investors, and major institutional interest.

Who Founded Solana?

Solana was founded by Anatoly Yakovenko, a former Qualcomm engineer with a background in distributed systems and software optimization. Yakovenko, alongside co-founders Greg Fitzgerald and Raj Gokal, created Solana to solve one of blockchain’s biggest limitations: scalability.

Unlike Bitcoin or Ethereum, Solana was designed to handle thousands of transactions per second while keeping fees at a fraction of a cent. Today, Solana is managed by the Solana Foundation, a non-profit based in Switzerland, but like other decentralized platforms, ownership lies with the community and SOL token holders.

How to Buy and Sell Solana (SOL)?

Buying and selling SOL is straightforward, as it is widely listed on major crypto exchanges.

  • Globally, you can trade SOL on Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, and KuCoin.

Steps to Buy Solana (SOL):

  1. Register on a trusted crypto exchange that lists SOL.

  2. Complete identity verification (KYC).

  3. Deposit funds: Turkish exchanges typically accept bank transfers or Papara; international exchanges also allow credit/debit cards.

  4. Go to the trading section, select SOL/USDT or SOL/USD, and enter the amount you want to purchase.

To sell SOL, follow the same process in the “Sell” section of your exchange. Confirm the transaction, and your funds will be credited to your account.

Can You Mine Solana?

Unlike Bitcoin, Solana cannot be mined because it does not use Proof-of-Work. Instead, it operates on a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) model, meaning SOL holders can participate in staking to secure the network.

  • Staking SOL: By locking up your SOL tokens in a staking wallet, you support the network and earn passive income in the form of rewards.

  • Validators: Run the network and process transactions, but require advanced hardware and significant SOL holdings.

  • Delegators: Everyday users can delegate their SOL to validators and earn rewards without running complex hardware.

Staking rewards typically range between 5–8% annually, depending on the validator chosen and network conditions.

Why Solana Matters

Solana has become one of the most promising blockchain ecosystems thanks to:

  • Scalability: Capable of processing 65,000 TPS.

  • Low Fees: Average cost per transaction is less than $0.01.

  • Ecosystem Growth: Popular in NFTs, DeFi, and Web3 projects.

  • Community & Developer Support: Thousands of developers building dApps on Solana.

Despite facing network outages in its early years, Solana continues to evolve and remains one of the strongest contenders in the blockchain race.
